Sometimes cold is a good thing, at least for Amsterdam -
this year the ice skaters could finally run on Amsterdam's
canals!

To get more ice the water flow was artificially stopped by
cutting some of the canals from the river.

The industrious inhabitants of the boat houses immediately
started to sell hot chocolate, gluhwein and even pea soup to the
skaters and set improvised advertisements along the canals. I was
not really convinced that pea soup and gluhwein is an amazing
combination but the amount of clients asking for it dispelled my
doubts about this enterprise.

Unfortunately this weather was only for a week and
Amsterdam soon returned to its normal state of unpleasant winter
dampness.
